Pues hasta aquí el drama de “other” y “another”. En este artículo encontrarás una explicación sencilla que te permitirá entender por fin cuándo usar cada uno. 1. Cómo usar “other” y “another”
“Another” y “other” pueden usarse tanto como determinantes como pronombres. ¿Recuerdas lo que eran esos maravillosos determiners? ¿Y los pronouns? Vamos a repasarlos muy rápido:
- Los determinantes son aquellas palabras que siempre acompañan a un sustantivo.
They already have fifteen children, but they want another baby.
You always go to the same restaurant. I should try other restaurants in your neighbourhood.
- Los pronombres son esas palabrejas tan útiles que usamos para sustituir cosas que ya hemos mencionado, y así no ser repetitivos.
I don’t really like these earrings. Do you have others?
Ya sabemos que hablamos de pendientes, así que, ¿para qué repetirlo? Usamos others, y listo.
I’ve already had four beers. Should I have another?
Probably not, pero si has logrado usar another en vez de “beer” y así no repetirte, quizá puedas tomarte just one more.

2. ¿Entonces cuál es la diferencia entre OTHER y ANOTHER?
Easy peasy, my friend. Todo depende de la persona o cosa a la que te refieres: si es singular, plural o incontable. Piénsalo así:
“Another” es simplemente la contracción de “an” + “other”. ¿Verdad que “an” siempre es singular (“an apple”, por ejemplo)? Pues “another” siempre sustituirá o acompañará a un sustantivo singular.
✏️ They already have four children, but they want another baby. Solo un baby, thank God.
✏️ I’ve already had four beers. Should I have another? Fortunately, aquí nos referimos a solo una cerveza más, otra cerveza.
*By the way, si aún te lías con “a” y “an”, esta lesson es para ti.
Usamos “other” cuando nos referimos a un sustantivo plural o incontable (ya sabes, esos que no se pueden contar: “one money? Absolutely not!”).

Y no te compliques más, la diferencia es que “another” es para el singular y “other(s)” es para el plural o sustantivos incontables.

I haven’t received any other news from him. (uncountable)
If you bring a few friends, and I bring others, the party is on! (plural)
4. ¿Por qué los hispanohablantes nos liamos tanto?
Don’t beat yourself up, dear student. Lo que confunde a la mayoría de los hispanohablantes es el término “another”, ya que no siempre es evidente que es simplemente el resultado de unir “an” (un) + “other”, y por tanto es siempre singular.
Es normal que esto no se entienda a la primera ni a primera vista, porque en español nunca dirías “un otro”. La traducción de “other” y “another” siempre es “otro/a(s)” en español.
Y ya que estamos con el tema…
5. ¿Cuándo se usa “others” y “the others”?
Usamos “other(s)” con el artículo “the” cuando ya tenemos identificada la segunda cosa a la que nos referimos:
👉🏼 He had a rose in one hand, and a box of chocolates in the other.
Sabemos que una persona tiene dos manos y, además, en este caso, el hablante ve la segunda.
👉🏼 Seven of my cousins attended my wedding, the others did not.
La persona que habla sabe perfectamente quiénes son sus otros primos.
En cambio, en los primeros ejemplos que hemos visto con “other (s)” y “another”, no teníamos identificada la segunda cosa a la que nos referíamos:
👉🏼 They already have fifteen children, but they want another baby.
No sabemos nada de este bebé porque aún no existe.
👉🏼 I just finished watching Friends for the 16th time… I really should watch other shows.
Sabemos que la persona quiere ver más series, pero no cuáles.
De hecho, si lo piensas, en español también añadimos el artículo cuando nos referimos a algo que ya hemos identificado y tenemos la certeza de que existe:
👉🏼 He had a rose in one hand, and a box of chocolates in the other.
Tenía una rosa en una mano y una caja de bombones en la otra.
👉🏼 Seven of my cousins attended my wedding, the others did not.
Siete de mis primos asistieron a mi boda. Los otros, no.
Makes sense, right? Great! Pero antes de irte, un recordatorio: ojo con estos…
6. Errores comunes al usar “other”, “the other” y “another”.
⚠️ “Another” es siempre singular:
Other names to add to the list include Robert, Amy and James.
NEVER EVER: “Another names…”
⚠️ Cuando “other” es un determinante (acompañando a un sustantivo), no puede llevar la “s” final, aunque el sustantivo sea plural:
These dishes are for vegans. The other dishes are for vegetarians.
NEVER EVER: “The others dishes…”
⚠️ Cuando “other” funciona como pronombre y sustituye a un sustantivo plural, también tomará la forma del plural:
Some GOT fans think Jon Snow should have been King of the Seven Kingdoms, others think differently.
NEVER EVER: “other think…”
