Cómo responder en inglés si no sabes la respuesta

Imagínate que alguien te pregunta algo y no sabes la respuesta. ¿Qué dirías en inglés?

• Do you know how to dial a number abroad on these new phones?
• Is it hashtag and then +, I’m not sure. Sorry, I don’t know.
• Thank you very much (for nothing).

Frases para hacer una petición 

Necesitas un pequeño favor y quieres evitar a toda costa que tu petición suene como una orden. Si quieres sonar extra polite, un truco es usar los modal verbs.

• Isabel, are you busy?
• Not really, I was just about to go on my break.
• Please, do me a favour. 
• Alright, what is it?
• I need to borrow your computer for a moment.
• Ok, I’ll go and grab a coffee while you do that.
• Order me an oat milk latte, please.
• Of course! Anything else?!

Frases para concertar una reunión 

Imagina que hay algún tema un tanto incómodo del que necesitas hablar con un empleado y quieres concertar una reunión. Huye del típico: quiero hablar contigo  (I want to speak to you) si no quieres espantar a nadie. El truco para sonar menos directo y más educado, es cambiar de Present tense a Past tense.

Y si quieres mostrar tu lado más amable y afectivo, entonces usa el past simple and past continuous y los verbos “wonder” y “hope”.

• Isabel, I want to have a word with you after lunch.
• (eating a sandwich) Swallows, glup. Okay.
• I want to review our quarterly goals
• Yes, no problem. 
• Come to my office at 4 pm and we can talk about it.
• Ok, I’ll be there.

Llega un cliente a tu despacho y estás al teléfono. ¿Cómo dirías en inglés de forma educada que espere fuera?

Frases para mostrar desacuerdo

Si crees que alguien ha metido la pata, para no sonar demasiado directo o contundente, un truco es usar palabras más suaves como: quite, slightly, a bit, a little.

Otro truco es hablar en 3a persona.

• I don’t see why not, it can only cheer people up!

Si tu trabajo implica hablar por teléfono, y quieres evitar sonar poco profesional, debes conocer el NATO phonetic alphabet sí o sí. En inglés es un absolute must! Frases para disculparte ante un error o malentendido

Si trabajas de cara al público en inglés, antes o después te tocara enfrentarte a un cliente enfadado o incluso enfurecido. Don’t panic! Recuerda que en este caso lo último que quieres dar a entender que el cliente ha tenido nada que ver con el error.

Es mucho mejor darle a entender que has malinterpretado la información y eso te ha llevado a cometer el error. ¿Cómo lo harías en inglés?
