Nuestra queridas preposiciones, un tema que nos da dolores de cabeza, o mejor dicho, de cuello, como dicen en inglés: They’re a real pain in the neck!
En este vídeo nos hemos centrado solo en las preposiciones de lugar – IN, ON y AT. No hemos incluído teoría, porque ya tenemos un vídeo en el que explicamos el uso de estas preposiciones.De todas formas, nunca viene mal refrescar estos conceptos, así que vamos a dar un repaso.
¿Cómo usar estas preposiciones de lugar en inglés?
IN
Para referirnos a la posición dentro de un entorno delimitado y algunos medios de transporte.
Entorno delimitado:
- In the building.
- In the bedroom.
- In the kitchen.
- In the corridor.
- In the garden.
- In the box.
- In a lift.
Algunos medios de transporte:
- In the car.
- In a taxi.
- In a van.
- In a lorry.
- In a helicoper.
- In a yellow submarine.
ON
Cuando hablamos de una superficie y para algunos medios de transporte.
Superficie:
- On the table.
- On the wall.
- On the carpet.
- On the floor.
- On the ceiling.
- On the bed.
- On a plate.
- On the menu.
- On the front page
Algunos medios de transporte:
- On the bus.
- On the train.
- On the plane.
- On a bike.
- On a boat / ship.
- On a camel, horse, elephant.
- On a motorbike.
AT
Para referirnos a un punto específico, ciertos lugares y eventos:
Punto específico:
- At the front door.
- At the entrance.
- At the end of the corridor.
- At the traffic light.
- At the crossroad.
Evento:
- At the party.
- At the conference.
- At the exhibition.
- At the concert.
Ciertos lugares:
- At home.
- At school.
- At university.
- At college.
Ambas son válidas:
- In/at the park. (dentro/ dentro o fuera).
- In/ at the museum.
- In/ at the train station.
- In/ at the cinema.
- In/ at the supermarket.
También hay ciertas expresiones estándar que no necesariamente siguen estas reglas:
IN
- In the queue.
- In the middle.
- In a picture.
- In the mirror.
- In the newspaper.
- In the sky.
- In the world.
- In the universe.
ON
- On the internet
- On your face.
- On the radio.
- On the news.
- On television.
- On the left/right.
- On a trip.
- On my way.
AT
- At work.
- At the doctor.
- At the top.
- At the bottom.
Sí, ya se que aún te quedan dudas, por eso hemos dejado los ‘tricky cases’ para el final.
Street
En general se pueden usar ambos, aunque es más común usar ON.
- On Oxford Street: “I live on Oxford Street”; “They’ve opened a new Zara on Oxford Street”; “I work on Oxford Street.”
- In the street: si hablas de la calle en general, sin especificar cuál, sí se suele usar IN : “I was walking in the street when I saw her”; “They children are playing in the street.”
Prison
- In prison: estás encarcelado.
- At the prison: estás dentro del recinto penitenciario, pero no encarcelado.
Hospital
- In hospital: estás hospitalizado.
- At the hospital: estás en el hospital, pero no hospitalizado.
Office
- In the office: Si dices ‘in the office’ te estás refiriendo a un despacho específico. ‘Peter is in his office’. O por ejemplo: “Where is your laptop?” Si dices: “It’s in my office”, quieres decir que está dentro de ese despacho concreto. Si dices: “It’s at the office”, quieres decir que lo has dejado en la oficina, sin específicar dónde.
- At the office: si quieres decir que alguien está en la oficina, de forma general, se usa siempre ‘at the office’.
Beach
- At/on the beach: estás se pueden usar indistintamente. Como decíamos en el vídeo, también existe la posibilidad de estar ‘in the beach’, aunque no es la posición más cómoda, porque en este caso estarías enterrado en la arena.

Thank you so much for this post. It´s very useful. I did one of the test, but I did well all of them, except one but I don´t understand why. This is my mistake: Ithought it was at the cinema and in when you are inside watching a movie.

No se suele decir ‘I’m in the cinema’, solo lo harías si quieres ser muy específico y dar a entender que estás dentro del cine.
Si has quedado con tu amigo en el cine y no os encontráis. “Where are you?” “I’m in/inside the cinema”. Confirmado por teacher Phillip 😛 Un besazo! 😘😘😘
