To be head over heels in love with someone

El amor ha invadido tu cuerpo desde tu cabeza hasta los talones.

“I’m totally head over heels with my English teacher”

“Are you nuts? She’s 10 years older than you!”

Love at first sight

Tanto si crees en el como si no, existe también existe una expresión en inglés para los que se enamoran a primera vista. Se puede utilizar tanto con personas como con objetos.

“Oh dear, have you bought another pair of shoes?”

“Yes, I couldn’t help it, I saw them in a shop window and it was love at first sight.”

Puppy love

Esta expresión que literalmente se traduce como ‘amor cachorro’, hace referencia a ese amor de juventud, normalmente tan apasoniado como fugaz. 

“Isn’t our son a bit too young to have a girlfriend?”

“Oh don’t worry, it’s just puppy love, it won’t last!”

Love rat

Si tienes buen oltato, ya habrás podido intuir que este amor no es tan deseable como el anterior. Y es que se llama ‘love rat’ a alguien que es infiel a su pareja sentimental.

“Did you know that Jane’s husband was in a relationship with his secretary for a year?”

“Goodness me! I would never have imagined that he was such a love rat.”

To cheat on someone

Esto es exactamente lo que hacen las ‘love rats’, engañar a su pareja con otra persona.

“Have you ever cheated on your husband?”

“None of your business!”

To dump somebody

Normalmente es la consecuencia de la expresión anterior. Si engañas a tu pareja, antes o después te descubrirá y te dejará. 

“What’s the matter with John, he seems a bit quiet lately?”
“He told me his girlfriend dumped him last night for no apparent reason.”

A one-night stand

La expresión perfecta para los que no quieren ataduras. Tener un “one- night- stand” es tener un rollo de una noche.

“Aren’t you seeing the Dutch guy anymore? He was so hot!”

“Do you mean the tall blond one? He was just a one-night stand.”

To have the hots for somebody

Si alguien te parece extremadamente atractivo, esta es tu frase.

“Have you seen the way Peter is looking at the new yoga teacher? He obviously has the hots for her.”

To be an item

Es una forma peculiar de denominar a una pareja, ya que ‘item’ significa ‘artículo’. De hecho es muy común ver carteles en las cajas rápidas del supermercado en Reino Unido: “Please, only baskets with no more than 20 items.” 

“I didn’t know George and Linda were an item.”

“Really? They’ve been together for ages!”

Soulmate

En inglés las medias naranjas solo existen a la hora de exprimir el zumo para el desayuno.Para referirte a un compañero/a sentimental o alguien con quien tienes mucha afinidad, usamos ‘soulmate’.

“I think you should ask her out! You seem like perfect soulmates.”

To pop the question

Disparar la pregunta … “Will you marry me?” 💍

“He took her on a trip to Mallorca, organised a romantic dinner with a stunning view, took the ring out of his pocket and popped the question.”

“Oh how lovely! So when is the wedding?”

“Well, she said she needed to sleep on it!”

“No way!”

Otra expresión muy común es: “To get down on one knee”

“So he took her on a cruise, got down on one knee and popped the question.”
